WATER RESOURCES IN SLOVENIA

THE SLOVENIAN SEA

Slovenia is connected with the Mediterranean by only 46.6 km of coast in Trieste Bay. This stretch of coast is scattered with old towns such as Koper, Izola and Piran, which for centuries were the only local urban centres.

 RIVERS IN SLOVENIA
Slovenia is a country rich in water resources. Rainfall during an average year amounts to 1.500 mm.

The river Sava is a river in

Southeast Europe, a right side

tributary of the Danube river

at Belgrade.Counting from Zelenci, the source

of Sava Dolinka, it is 947

kilometers long. It belongs to the

Black Sea drainage basin and it is

the 16th longest European river.

The river Soča is a 140 km long river

that flows through western Slovenia

and northeastern Italy. An Alpine

river in character, its source lies in

the Julian Alps in Slovenia. The river

runs past Slovenia’s highest peak,

Triglav (2,864m) before heading

south and entering the Adriatic Sea.

The river Drava flows through the

southern parts of Central  Europe.

It links five countries on its 725 km

course from the Italian Alps to its

confluence with the Danube. The

first short stretch lies in Italy, then

the Drava flows across Austria and

Slovenia into Croatia .

Rivers in our region

The river Kamniška Bistrica is an Alpine river

in northern Slovenia. It springs from

the Kamnik Alps, near the border

with Austria. It is 33 km long and it

flows through the town of Kamnik. It

flows into Sava river 10 km east of

Ljubljana, Slovene capital.

The river Nevljica comes under

Kozjak and it flows through Tuhinj

Valley. Bones of an iceage mammoth

were found near this river. Many

foreign researchers came and

helped the excavations. Today, the

mammoth skeleton can be seen in

Slovenian Natural History museum

in Ljubljana.

The river Motnišnica runs through

Motnik, a small village near our

school, and often causes floods

during the rain season in autumn

and spring.
