The way our students comprehend and translate one of the most famous Slovene ballad:
THE RIVER MAN
Women from Ljubljana have always been known as beautifully grown.
But Urška was the most gorgeous of all,
she knew how to love, how to refuse,
how to be polite and how to be rude.
A lot of young women experienced jealous feelings
because Urška turned all men into enchanted beings.
On the old town square under the great linden tree,
people were dancing happily,
but Urška, the prettiest of all,
didn’t want to dance at all.
After a while she saw the most handsome man,
and her heart started beating again.
He invited her to dance,
she accepted with a meaningful glance.
They danced proudly on the dance floor,
everybody stared and wanted more.
The River Man had different thoughts,
he took her into the deep river together with his
frocks.
